Air Canada’s Aeroplan program is one of the most valuable credit card transfer partners in the world of award travel.
With a huge list of partner airlines, a reasonable award chart, and transfer partnerships with Chase, Capital One, and American Express, it gives credit card holders a lot of flexibility when booking award flights.

In this guide, we’ll cover all the ways to transfer points to Aeroplan, the best cards for earning them, and tips for getting the most out of your redemptions.

Credit Card Transfer Partners

Chase

Chase points are among the easiest to earn thanks to a wide range of credit cards and no lifetime sign-up bonus restrictions (unlike Amex).

  • Chase 5/24 Rule: Business cards don’t count toward 5/24, so if you have multiple businesses with EINs, you can rack up points quickly.
  • Transfer Ratio: 1:1 to Aeroplan
  • Transfer Time: Usually instant, but can take up to 1 business day

  • Lifetime Rule: Most Amex cards have a once-per-lifetime bonus, but targeted mail offers with unique codes can bypass this.
  • Example: I’ve earned multiple Amex Business Platinum bonuses through mailed offers.
  • High Bonus Potential: Some offers go as high as 250,000 MR points for $20,000 spend in 3 months—enough for two roundtrip business class tickets to Europe on Aeroplan.
  • Amex Membership Rewards transfer to Aeroplan at a 1:1 ratio.

Capital One calls their rewards miles, but they function like flexible points.

  • Transfer Ratio: 1:1 to Aeroplan
  • Best Card: Venture X earns 2x on all purchases, making it great for people who don’t want to track category bonuses.
  • Drawback: Limited card lineup and modest welcome bonuses; bonuses can only be earned once every 48 months.
  • Transfer Ratio: 8,500 miles = 5,000
  • Not available for new applicants—only via product change.

Best Credit Cards for Earning Aeroplan Points

Aeroplan Credit Card by Chase

While Air Canada offers a co-branded Aeroplan credit card through Chase, most travelers are better off earning flexible points (Chase Ultimate Rewards, Amex Membership Rewards, or Capital One Miles) that can transfer to Aeroplan and other partners.
The Aeroplan card makes sense only if you:

  • Fly Air Canada frequently
  • Want a free first checked bag
  • Are chasing Aeroplan Elite Status

Otherwise, focus on cards that give you more redemption flexibility.

Amex Gold
  • Amex® Gold Card – 4x points at restaurants and U.S. supermarkets (up to $25,000 per year, then 1x).
  • Amex Business Platinum – Targeted offers up to 250,000 points after $20,000 spend in 3 months during promotions.
  • Amex Platinum Card® (Personal) – Up to 175k signup bonuses during targeted offers. Start with the Gold before the Platinum to maximize bonuses (lifetime rule applies to personal cards but not business cards).
Picture of Chase Sapphire Cards
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred® – Solid all-around card with bonuses up to 100,000 points in the past.
  • Chase Sapphire Reserve® – Premium travel perks but higher annual fee; better only if you fully use the credits.
  • Ink Business Preferred® – Historically offers up to 200,000 points; better for signup chasers than daily use.
Capital One Venture X
  • Capital One Venture X – $395/year with 2x miles on all purchases plus lounge access; 75,000-mile offer after $4,000 spend in 3 months.
  • Capital One Venture X Business – Sometimes offers 150,000 miles after $30,000 spend in 3 months; best for heavy spenders.

By earning flexible points, you can:

  • Take advantage of transfer bonuses to Aeroplan when they appear
  • Keep your points safe from devaluation by having multiple redemption options
  • Avoid locking points into a single airline program too early
Hilton Honors

While you can transfer hotel points to Aeroplan, the value is almost always worse than using them for hotel stays.

  • Hilton Honors: 10:1 ratio
  • IHG: 5:1 ratio
  • Marriott Bonvoy: 3:1 ratio (only exception worth considering—bonus 5,000 Aeroplan miles per 60,000 Bonvoy points transferred)
  • Wyndham, Best Western, Choice: All 5:1 ratios or worse

Points.com

You can buy Aeroplan points through Points.com, but only:

  • To top off your account for an immediate booking
  • During high-percentage bonus sales

Never speculatively buy miles—devaluations happen.

Aeroplan Expiration Policy

Aeroplan miles expire after 18 months of inactivity.

To keep your account active, you can:

  • Earn miles via flights or partners
  • Redeem for a ticket
  • Donate miles
  • Transfer at least 1,000 credit card points into Aeroplan (counts as activity)

Redeeming Aeroplan Points

Aeroplan shines for long-haul business class redemptions:

  • Houston → Tokyo on ANA: 75,000 points in business class
  • Newark → Singapore on Singapore Airlines: 87,500 points in business class

Unfortunately Singapore Airlines only releases one award seat per flight to Aeroplan.

Add a stopover for up to 365 days for just 5,000 extra points—great for visiting two destinations on a one-way ticket.

United Polaris awards used to be a sweet spot at 70k one-way to Europe. Since switching to dynamic pricing, they’re less competitive, but other Star Alliance partners remain good value.
